A Step-By-Step Guide To Traditional Keyword Research

A Step-By-Step Guide To Traditional Keyword Research

Traditional keyword research is an old school approach to finding low-competition, high search volume keywords, and it’s one that’s still favored by many SEO’s and content marketers today.

Whether you’re using free tools, like Google Keyword Planner, or the myriad of premium keyword research tools out there, the traditional approach is generally broken down into 4 steps.

  • Step #1: Find Seed Keywords
Using a number of strategies, research competitors and create a list seed keywords for step 2.
  • Step #2: Plug Seed Keywords
Plug those seed keywords into a traditional keyword research tool to generate a larger list of keyword opportunities.
  • Step #3: Filter Keyword Opportunities
Sort and filter the list of keyword opportunities based on both monthly search volume and SEO data.
  • Step #4: Evaluate competitiveness
Evaluate the strength of your remaining keywords based on a keyword difficulty metric and manual SERP analysis.

We even created a nice little graphic for yah. Because, why not?

Traditional Keyword Research Graph

For this guide, I’ll reference many free tools as I can, but I can’t understate the efficiency of a paid tool when it comes to keyword research.

Step #1: Finding Seed Keywords

Seed keywords are used as the basis of your research, and they’re essentially just keywords that “look good” on the surface.

There’s no magic formula or exact science to finding them because there’s really no such thing as a perfect seed keyword.

Start by plucking keywords off the top of your head, which usually gets you a hand-full of seed keywords to start with.

After that, you can start using some free tools to dig a little deeper.

#1: UberSuggesthttps://ubersuggest.io/

Back Pain Search In Ubersuggest

UberSuggest uses Google’s autocomplete API to pull in search suggestions.

You can emulate what this tool does by typing your keyword in Google followed by every letter of the alphabet and recording the results. Obviously, this would be a slow and cumbersome process.

Back Pain Google Autosuggest

Ain’t nobody got time fo’ dat.

Using UberSuggest, you can automate this process and turn your primary keyword into a juicy list of seed keyword in a matter of seconds.

You can even export the entire list as a CSV and upload that into your keyword research tool of choice, assuming it has a supported import option.

#2: AnswerThePublic – http://answerthepublic.com

Back Pain Keyword Answerthepublic

AnswerThePublic is another free research tool that combines your primary keyword with common ‘question words’ such as:

  • How…What
  • Where…
  • When…
  • Which…

This is a great way to generate a ton of seed keyword ideas that are more informational, and less commercial.

#3: Amazon – http://amazon.com

Commercial Keyword Search On Amazon

When it comes to finding commercial keywords, Amazon is an absolute treasure-trove of keyword ideas.

Either navigate to your niche-related category or perform a search using your primary keyword. You can scope out even more keyword ideas by looking at the suggested subcategories and top-selling product names.

#4: Reddit – https://www.reddit.com

Traditional Keyword Research On Reddit

Lastly, go where your target audience hangs out online and leverage that community for keyword ideas.

Message boards and forums are perfect for this, and Reddit in particular is usually a good place to start. Reddit is essentially a HUGE forum made up of smaller subreddits, each covering different niches.

You can almost always find some hidden gems in the subreddits:

Keyword Examples In Subreddits

If you can’t find any related subreddit for your niche, you can try searching for your “niche + forum” in Google.

Almost all good niches have some level of online community behind it, it’s just a matter of finding out where the target audience congregates.

Step #2: Plug Your Seed Keywords

Armed with your list of seed keywords, the next step is to feed them into your keyword research tool so you can sit back, and let the magic happen.

Let’s stay with the ‘free tools’ theme for now, which brings us to Google’s Keyword Planner.

Depending on the tool you’re using and the size of your list, you can either manually input each keyword or simply import your entire list of keywords at once.

This is actually venturing into competitor-based research, but this is my article so I can do what I want :p

Either way, you should get back a list of semi-relevant keywords based on your seed keywords (or URL).

Note: You can import a list of keywords into Google Keyword Planner but you won’t get back any additional suggestions. This is useful if you’ve built up a large enough seed keyword list from step 1.

Google Keyword Planner Keyword List Upload

Step #3: Filter Keyword Opportunities

This is where you cut the fat and drill down into the keywords that are actually worth targeting.

It’s also the area where premium keyword research tools massively outperform free alternatives, but we’ll come back to that in a mo’.

Here’s what you’re looking for:

  • Niche relevance
  • High search volume
  • Low competition

Niche Relevance

What do I mean by niche relevance?

Well, let’s take a quick look at the 700 results I got back from Google’s Keyword Planner.

Google Keword Planner Niche Relevance

Because one of my seed keywords was ‘back pain cancer’, the Keyword Planner has also given me keywords related to cancer.

Since I’m in the ‘back pain’ niche, this keyword has low niche relevance.

One way to get around this is to use the ‘keywords to include’ filter. In this case, I might filter out any keyword that doesn’t contain the keyword, “back”.

Keyword Planner Filtering Options

Though this can really clean up your list, it’s not a perfect solution.

You may be filtering out potential opportunities that for some reason don’t include the keyword “back”, and you’ll probably still have a few irrelevant suggestions as well.

For that reason, you’ll still have to sift through these manually but it’s a lot more manageable by applying the following filters…

High Search Volume

Let’s be honest, it doesn’t matter how relevant a keyword is if nobody’s searching for it.

But here’s the good news:

You can use filters to narrow down monthly search volumes in almost every keyword research tool on the planet.

Back Pain Keyword Search In Kwfinder

And here’s the bad news:

You can’t do it with the Google Keyword Planner, at least not without exporting suggestions and running filters in Excel.

But again…. ain’t nobody got time fo’ dat.

It get’s worse, folks. As you may have noticed, Google doesn’t even give you accurate search volumes anymore.

This data is far too broad to rely on and it’s reason alone to use a premium keyword research tool over free alternatives.

(Yeah, most tools have stopped using Google data)

Back Pain Kwfinder Search Data

By having access to this data and being able to apply search volume filters, you can essentially cut out low-volume keywords and make your job that much easier.

Low Competition

This would normally be exclusive to step 4, ‘Evaluating Keyword Difficulty’.

Fortunately, filtering a list of suggestions by competition level is now pretty reliable thanks to a constantly evolving metric, called ‘keyword difficulty’.

Lower Back Pain Kwfinder Keyword Difficulty

Some tools are more accurate than others with their calculations, and some tools – like the Google Keyword Planner – don’t even include a keyword difficulty metric.

If you don’t have access to a premium tool, you’ll just have to skip this step and put in some extra work later. (I’ll explain soon)

Using the tool in the screenshot above – KWFinder – as an example, you can apply a keyword difficulty filter to laser in on those low competition keywords.

Back Pain Kwfinder SEO Difficulty

At this point, you should have a very targeted list of opportunities which makes the final step much, much easier.

Step #4: Evaluating Keyword Difficulty

This is where SERP analysis comes in.

SERP analysis just means looking at the first page of results for a given keyword and weighing up the competition based on various data points.

This isn’t exactly a fast process so If you weren’t able to narrow down your suggestions effectively, you’ll have a lot more work to do here.

We can basically do this the hard way, or the paid way.

SERP Analysis The Hard Way (Free)

If you’ve been using Google Keyword Planner, you probably won’t be surprised to know that it doesn’t offer any form of SERP analysis.

The reason?

Google’s Keyword Planner isn’t actually built for organic keyword research. It’s a research tool for advertisers.

Because of that, we’ll need to take a more manual approach using a free Chrome extension, called MozBar.

ahrefs chrome extension

(You can use other SEO toolbars, but I like Moz)

Admittedly, it doesn’t give you everything you need, *cough* referring domains, and it’s true, Moz doesn’t have the best link index of all time…

…but considering it’s free, you really can’t complain.

Once you have that installed, it’s just a case of plugging each of your potential keywords into Google and looking for a weak search results page.

Here’s an example of a relatively easy SERP using the keyword phrase, “back pain exercises for elderly people”.

Serp Analysis For Traditional Keyword Research

As you can imagine, repeating this manual SERP analysis process for dozens of keywords can get old, fast.

And that brings me nicely to the paid tools…

SERP Analysis The Easy Way (Paid)

Performing a manual SERP analysis with a paid tool is still, well… manual…. but it’s still significantly faster.

The reason for that is data aggregation.

Premium keyword research tools do a much better job at aggregating SEO data, and presenting it neatly within the tool’s own interface.

Here’s how it looks inside Ahrefs:

Not only do I not have to leave the tool to review SERP competition, but I also get a lot more data to work with.

And depending on which tool you use, paid members get access to ALL the data on offer. In the case of Ahrefs, you’re getting the largest link index in the industry.

Aside from those (huge) benefits, the analysis works the same way as it does using MozBar.

Conclusion

Traditional keyword research has long been the backbone of any serious content strategy, and it continues to be used by marketers to this day.

That said, many SEO’s have adopted a newer approach that leverages your competitors organic rankings to find pre-qualified keywords.

To learn more about the competitor-based approach to keyword research and how it breaks down, read our step-by-guide.

Use the proper keyword and you will get more search engine traffic…

Optimize your website keywords and you will reach your business goals…

How many times have you gotten such advices in your journey as a business owner or wannabe SEO?

Probably a lot.

That’s because keywords and keyword research are the first things you should learn about when you want to grow your online business using search engine optimization.

I have been in your situation a long back, and I know how fruitful keyword research could be for anyone like you or me.

And hence,

This guide is written for a beginner like you to understand the most fundamental concept of SEO – keyword research.

Keyword research

Even if you never understood what is the purpose of keyword research, and how do you actually do it, this guide will help you understand every aspect of it.

My goal today is to help you learn about:

  1. What is Keyword research?
  2. What is the importance of Keyword research?
  3. How Keyword research could benefit you?
  4. How to perform Keyword research?

Let’s start with the basics…

What is Keyword Research?

Keyword research is the process of finding keywords that would drive targeted traffic to your business. Mostly, this is done by identifying how your target users are finding a website like yours.

Let me simplify it,

when we are looking for a solution to any of our problems, we use a search engine like “Google” “Duckduckgo” to find an answer to that.

We expect the search engine to give us a solution within the first page of search, which is also known as SERP (Search engine results page).

Keyword research helps us to identify those “phrases”, “words”, “queries”, that the mass is asking using a search engine.

As a business or even a blog, when we know what kind of queries users (mass) are asking via search engines, we can optimize or create new pages, helping users to find the answer, and use that traffic to grow our business.

Alternatively, using the same keywords (queries) you can also run PPC ads on platform like Google ads or Facebook ads, to drive traffic to yours or your client websites.

In technical words;

The purpose of Keyword research is to find those “topic”, “ideas” and assign a business value to it, which is commonly used by your target audience. Another way to look at Keyword research is: It helps you to discover those questions and queries which your target customers are asking on the web, and gives you the advantage to speak the language your customer will understand.

Let us understand this with an example:

A simple example is, let’s say a recently became father wants to buy a stroller for his kid. He uses this query “Best baby stroller” in Google search, to find the best brand. Something like this…

Since Google search is smart, it auto-populates a lot of frequently used queries to help the father ask the right question.

Now, depending on the father location, and his understanding, he will stick with his query, or perhaps pick one that is suggested by Google.

Now, search engine keeps a log of how many times these queries are being asked by millions of users around the globe.

The process of keyword research shows the most popular query, along with geo-location, and the number of times these queries has been asked within a specific time (ex: 30 days).

Now, as a business owner, these stats would help you understand which of these queries, you should answer on your website, and in turn, it will help users to discover your website, and the solution.

The solution ultimately helps owners to drive more targeted traffic from search engines, which converts into direct sales, ad sales or even as an affiliate sales.

Well, this is how a keyword research helps.

With a little preparation, you could drive significant traffic to your blog or business and hence make most out of your hard work.

The process of optimizing your keyword for search engine is called “On Page SEO“.

That’s a topic for advanced users, but today we dwell deep into the keyword research.

Performing keyword research, help you experience the business in a record time. Since, you are using data with your emotions, it would help you maximize your work.

Let’s understand this with an example…

Earlier I talked about a father looking to buy a “Stroller” for his son. Now, lets assume you are a business who is into selling baby stroller. (You could be anyone, and replace baby stroller with your product).

By using keyword research tools, we could find data like which keyword “Also known as queries, question, search term” a parent is using on a search engine to find a solution.

The following result is from a tool called “SEMrush“, that shows similar queries with a lot of data as shown below:

Let’s try to understand what’s happening in this image. (Even if you don’t understand 100%, don’t worry as this is normal for a beginner.)

  1. Keyword: This is the query users are asking to find the best baby stroller. When doing SEO, this is the phrase that we “target”, so we often call this as “target keyword” or “Focus keyword”.
  2. Volume: This tells you roughly how many people are searching for that particular keyword in a given month. This is a very important metric as even if you assume a search term will be popular, search data will tell you otherwise. In the above example, you can see two similar keywords which have a considerable difference in monthly search volume:
    • Best rated baby stroller: 140 searches/month
    • Best rated baby stroller 201930 searches/month
  3. Trend: This one helps you to see if the keyword trend is going up (more people are searching) or going down (fewer people are searching). For example, iPhone 11 Pro could be a popular term in 2019-2020, but as a new iPhone is released, this term will lose value. You will understand this in-depth, as we move ahead in our keyword research guide.
  4. Keyword difficulty: This is an important metric that helps you understand, how difficult or easy it is going to be rank for a target keyword on the first page of Google. These tools, compare all the existing ranking pages for things like “On page SEO”, “Backlink profile”, “domain authority” and a few others, to rank such queries. The lower the rank is, easier it would be to rank for.

Like this, there are many matrices you will be getting when you start with Keyword research.

Im nutshell, Keyword research helps you to make data driven decision. In case if you not aware, data is the new oil.

Before we move ahead,

Do read my earlier guide on difference between SEO keywords and queries, it will help you create a better mindset for keyword research.

Moving ahead, lets look at the benefits of keyword resarch.

What are the Importance of Keyword research?

Not all keywords are equal, and lets try to quantify this. The process of Keyword research could help your business (Blog, ecommerce, service or any other) in the following ways:

  1. Keyword research helps you understand the language used by your target audience on a search engine. We typically use Google search as a base, since its the biggest search engine.
  2. It helps you discover untapped queries, that could directly help you get paid customers from organic searches such as Google search, Baidu and others.
  3. Engaged audience: The audience that you will be receiving is already hot (ready to buy), and you will get high engagement in the form of comments, sharing or even as a sale.
  4. Market and customer trend: Periodically, performing Keyword research will help you to understand in which direction the market and customers are heading.
  5. Competitive advantage: Incorporating keywords and SEO before your competitors, will give you a solid advantage. If done right, in a less crowded niche, it could help you earn a lot of backlinks as a first mover advantage.
  6. Reduce PPC Cost: Keywords SEO will help you drive those traffic for free, which a business, usually pay for in the form of PPC. Such organic ranking could significantly reduce your business digital marketing cost.
  7. More Ad revenue: Marketers and bloggers who rely on income from Google AdSense or Media.net, they could use the Keyword research to find high CPC keywords and thus increase their ad revenue significantly, with the same effort.

There are many more advantages of Keyword research, the above few are the prime one.

Here is a less known fact about Keyword research:

A lot of people mistake keyword research as the process of finding only high volume keywords, which is not the fact.

The task of you as an SEO is to remove those keywords which are not going to benefit your business in any way. Moreover, after finding profitable keywords, you will also learn how do you prioritize them for maximum benefits in shorter span.

The good thing about Keyword research skills is, once you put this into practice, it just keeps getting better.

Now, its time to get into the technicality of KW research.

Types of Keywords based on the users intent

Moving ahead with our previous example “Baby stroller”, a parent could ask this question with different intent. For example:

  • A parent could ask to understand how to pick a baby stroller.
  • A parent just wants to know which one is #1 baby stroller in today’s time.
  • A parent is ready to buy best baby stroller right away.
  • A doctor could be using this query for his research.

Do you see, how the same query meant different when used for different purpose. This is what is known as search intent.

This brings to the point, Keywords could be sub-divided into different types, based on the users’ intent.

These are the 4 most common type:

  1. Commercial keywords
  2. Transactional keywords
  3. Informational Keywords
  4. Navigational Keywords

These 4 types determine, which keyword is directly going to affect your revenue. This is also closely related to content funnel (TOFU, MOFU, BOFU), which is a learning for some other day.

Keyword could also be categorised in a few other ways, such as…

Number of words:

  • Short tail Keywords a.k.a Head Keywords: (Ex: Baby stroller)
  • Long-tail keywords. (Ex: Best baby stroller in Australia)

Also check out: Long tail keywords finder tools

What do you need for Keyword research?

Here at ShoutDreams, I follow a unique style of researching keywords.

You need the following things for performing Keyword research:

  1. A tool (free or paid) for researching keywords
  2. A list of Seed Words or a list of SEO competitive domains/businesses. (More on this further)
  3. Using seed words to create a list of SEO keywords or using competitive websites to find profitable keywords
  4. A document (excel or similar) to capture, and cleanup the keyword.
  5. A system to delegate the final keywords for production ( Creating blog articles, eBooks, video content, product page)
  6. Measuring the ranking using a keyword rank tracking tool.

Once you incorporate keyword research as your business marketing process, it helps you grow organically.

This the exact steps I follow to drive more than 15 million page-views every year and earn close to 1 million USD every year. This website “ShoutMeLoud” is bext example of outcome of Keyword research process.

After 10 years of implementation, I define the steps of Keyword research as:

  1. Research
  2. Cleanup
  3. Execute/Delegate
  4. Monitor
  5. Optimize

These 5 steps will cover all the aspect of keyword research.

Now, I believe you and me are on the same page, and its time to learn how to do the keyword research.

3 Different ways to do Keyword research:

There are various techniques you could follow for researching SEO Keywords. Let’s look at some of the most popular once, which could be executed by even a newbie.

1. Find a competitor or top site keyword:

This is perhaps the easiest way to find keywords that are already working for an existing website. In this, process, we identify 2-3 websites which are the top in the niche we are targeting. For example: “best Baby stroller”

A quick Google search has shown the results from these top 3 websites. You could repeat the process for your target keyword, and once you have identified the top 3-4 winning websites, head to SEMRush, which is a keyword research tool.

On the SEMRush dashboard, enter the domain name that you identified from Google search and use it to find keywords that the domain is ranking for.

SEMRush will show you all the vital details like:

  • Which keyword is driving maximum traffic to the particular website
  • The volume, traffic %, KD, Keyword position
  • Which page on the website is getting traffic for which keyword

SEMrush also gives you an option to filter keywords based on various factors. If you need a more detailed guide on this, let me know in the comment section below.

And like this, within minutes you have found the Pandora box of profitable keyword for your business.

2. Using Keyword Gap to find easy wins

This is one underutilized Keyword research technique that could help you find keywords that your competitors are ranking for, but you are not. This is idle for an existing website to find low hanging fruits.

3. Using Seed Words for researching Keywords

This is idle for any new and existing website alike. This is more time consuming than the above two methods, but this will help you discover unique keywords that no one is targeting.

You can use this method by using and Keyword research tools or even a long tail keyword tool.

We will again use SEMRush for a better understanding of this method.

  • Head over to SEMrush
  • Click on Keyword Magic Tool

Enter your seed keyword and select the primary country that you are targeting.

Now, click on Search and within a few seconds, SEMRush will generate a ton of keywords from your seed keyword.

You can filter the keywords based on various parameters such as:

  • Exact match will include the exact match of the phrase ‘baby stroller’ with the same words order. So you will get ‘buy baby stroller’, ‘where to buy baby stroller’, ‘buy baby stroller in San Francisco’, etc.
  • Broad match will include all forms of the words ‘buy’ and ‘new’ and will suggest variations of the word order. So you will get all keywords from exact match plus ‘‘buy the newest baby stroller’, ‘buy baby stroller new’, ‘buy super-new baby stroller in New York’, etc.
  • Phrase Match
  • Related Keywords

You can do the same thing using the Google Keyword Planner tool (GKP), which is free. The only downside is, Keyword planner tool by Google is created for PPC and is not super friendly for SEO keyword research. However, for anyone who is running on a shoestring budget, the Keyword planner tool by Google is idle.

Note: In this guide, I used SEMrush, as an example because this is my go to Keyword research tools. However, you could always use similar tools such as KWFinder to achieve the same.

The above steps, will help you to capture the primary keyword. Now, once you have the vital piece of data, you need to do a few things such as:

  1. Create the cluster of similar keyword
  2. Create a SEO plan like to create new content or product pages, website structure
  3. Measuring it, and optimizing it.

I will be talking about keyword clustering, and creating a SEO plan in the upcoming guides.

For now, I hope this guide helped you to understand what is keyword research, and how actually you could do keyword research.

I understand this is an extensive topic, and you might be having a few questions. Do utilize the comment section to ask your questions related to Keyword research.

Also, if you are an experienced SEO, feel free to share your way of performing keyword research by commenting below.

How to Research Keywords with Google’s Algorithms in Mind

How to Research Keywords with Google’s Algorithms in Mind

How to Research Keywords with Google’s Algorithms in Mind

Introduction

Progress does not stand still, especially when it comes to web technologies.

Since 1998, Google has turned from a primitive machine, recognizing only words, into a human-like brainbox understanding the context.

It means the times of keyword stuffing are long gone, never to come back.

If you load your content with exact-match keywords, get ready for a penalty from the ruthless Panda algorithm that’s been on the lookout for keyword manipulations since 2011.

Don’t get things wrong.

Keyword research still matters.

Even so, you have to take a new, more human-oriented approach.

Learn what Google prioritizes in content today and how to research keywords in line with its demanding algorithms.

How Google Algorithms Changed the Game

Google is a notorious perfectionist that’s constantly looking for ways to improve the user’s experience.

But what is better for users can be a headache for website owners.

One day, they wake up to find a sudden traffic drop because Google rolled out a new algorithm update.

organic traffic

When doing keyword research, you must take the major algorithms dictating the rules of content creation into account.

They are as follows.

Panda

Panda came into play in 2011 to penalize sites for duplicate content, spam, and low quality posts written around specific keywords.

However, content mills were not the only ones affected.

As a result of the Panda 4 update, larger sites like eBay that ranked in the Top 10 for some seed keywords fell out of there.

Hummingbird

With the rollout of Hummingbird in 2013, Google put user intent above wording.

Pages reached the top for queries even though they didn’t contain exact words typed into the search bar.

It happened because the engine gained a better understanding of what users had in mind.

This means it started delivering long, in-depth answers to the questions of all users.

RankBrain

RankBrain is an artificial intelligence system based on machine learning.

It was launched in 2015 as part of Hummingbird.

When RankBrain comes across a never-seen-before query, it can guess what words have a similar meaning and filter search results according to their relevance.

RankBrain was confirmed to be the third most important factor in Google’s ranking algorithm.

How Intelligent is Google Today?

With the launch of these algorithms and their regular updates, there’s nothing left of the primitive mechanism which understood nothing but separate words.

Let’s play with search results a little bit to get into Google’s braincase and see what it’s capable of today.

Google Equates Singular and Plural Forms

Imagine you want to buy a new fillet knife.

If you type this query in the singular, Google will show you a lot of results in the plural.

results plural

Google Takes Into Account Only the Word Root

Let’s say you need a DIY guide on how to install an antenna.

Besides an exact-match query “install,” you’ll see different forms of this word root in search results, e.g. “installing” and “installation.”

It means Google ignores suffixes and endings.

suffixes endings

Google Knows What Acronyms Stand for

If you are looking for, say, a marketing agency in Los Angeles, you can shorten the city name to LA.

Google will get your point.

google acronyms

Google Understands Synonyms

If you type in the query “sports gear,” Google can deliver results optimized for “sports equipment.”

If a page is relevant for “gear,” it’s relevant for “equipment” and other similar words.

google synonyms

Google Interprets Concepts

Whether you use a short query “number of Facebook employees” or the entire question “how many employees does Facebook have,” you’ll get pretty much the same organic results.

google concepts

But you may not even scroll that far, as Google knows the answer and shows it above organic results.

How to Do Keyword Research Complying with Google’s Algorithms

Although Google doesn’t focus on exact-match queries anymore, your content still needs keyword optimization at some point.

Check out the main steps to find keyword ideas that will work in the post-Hummingbird era.

Research Your Target Audience

As Google sets a priority on the user’s intent, it makes sense to start keyword research with your target audience.

Think of how you can answer people’s questions instead of how to rank for a certain query.

Users browse the web to find solutions to their problems, not your products.

Let’s say your company develops PrestaShop themes.

This means that your target audience are people who want to build an online store without hiring costly web developers.

If it’s someone who’s tech savvy, they’ll probably use “PrestaShop themes” as a search query.

But what if it’s someone who crafts jewelry in their spare time and wants to monetize their hobby?

How high are the chances that such a person knows about ready-made themes or what PrestaShop is?

Little to no chance!

If people have no idea about the existence of your product, they won’t type its name into Google.

Instead of Prestashop themes, they can ask Google the following questions:

  • how to build online store yourself
  • what software online store needs
  • how to sell products online

Here are common places where you can find prospects’ interests, pains, and wording:

  • social media communities (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc)
  • forums and question-and-answer sites (Quora, Reddit, etc)

Choose More Specific Variations of Your Seed Keywords

While some users are clueless about your products, there is a category of people who do know about them.

To target product-aware prospects, make a list of your seed keywords.

“PrestaShop themes” is a too broad keyword to compete for.

What to do?

Try to be more specific using its long-tail variations.

Long-tail keywords are words or phrases that have a narrow meaning and a low search volume.

On average, they get around 30-80 searches per month.

Note that while the volume of a long-tail keyword variation is low, its collective volume can be quite high.

That’s because users write the same query in different ways, e.g. synonyms, different word forms, etc.

As Google doesn’t bother about that, you shouldn’t either.

Go to Ahrefs Keywords Explorer, enter your seed keyword, and filter results by their search volume.

Opt for up to 70 searches per month.

Spy on Your Competitors’ Keywords

Every niche has top players you should learn from, as they already rank for a lot of your target keywords.

You can find out which keywords bring them more traffic and use them in your content too.

To check out your competitor’s keyword base, use this handy SERP checker in Ahrefs Keywords Explorer.

Here are the key points to focus on:

  • amount of organic traffic coming to your competitor’s page
  • number of keywords that page is ranking for
  • keyword generating the most organic traffic and its monthly volume

Next, click on the number of keywords to see them all in Ahrefs Site Explorer.

There are some extra options that can make your keyword analysis easier:

  • filters (use a low search volume)
  • sorting options (order keywords by difficulty, volume, traffic or the position your competitor takes in the SERP by the chosen keyword)

Stand Out from Your Competitors

Borrowing competitors’ keywords is a rewarding SEO strategy, but you should know where to draw the line.

What’s the point in thousands of pages covering the same topics?

It’s so annoying to jump from one site to another and read the same stuff re-written with different words.

To build a loyal audience, you must provide unique value.

That’s how readers will distinguish you from all the others.

Look for unique keywords that your competitors haven’t used yet.

There are some free tools that will help you find them.

Let’s try Answer The Public.

It can generate a huge list of question-based keywords in the long-tail form.

The tool is perfect for getting more ideas of search intents your target audience may have.

Another free tool with a large keyword database is Ubersuggest.

With its help, you can browse keyword ideas alphabetically and expand each of them to get even more variations.

Focus on Major Keyword Metrics

Your keyword research will give you so many options that you may wonder which of them actually work.

Here are the major metrics to consider when choosing keywords for your content.

Search Volume

This metric shows how many times people type a certain keyword into Google per month.

The higher the volume, the more traffic it can drive.

Even though I recommend using keywords with a low search volume first and foremost, keywords with a higher volume can be of great use too.

What you need to keep in mind is the seasonality of keywords.

If your content refers to something that can be used throughout the year like PrestaShop themes, there’s nothing to worry about.

But if you deal with seasonal items like Halloween costumes, most people will search for them only before the holiday.

search volume

As you can see, this keyword has a monthly volume of 580K, but the data is a monthly average for 12 months.

Before Halloween, this metric grows even higher.

Once the holiday is over, it drops and stays low during the rest of the year.

google trends

To check the seasonality of keywords, use Google Trends.

Clicks

Not all keywords with a high search volume can generate a lot of traffic, even if your site ranks #1 for it.

Let’s say you posted an article about Hillary Clinton’s age.

Here’s what your audience will see in the SERP for such a query.

hillary clinton age

There is no need to scroll down to organic results and visit your site, as Google shows an instant answer.

These types of keywords won’t bring you that much traffic, even though the one I used as an example gets 99K monthly searches.

The instant answer is a SERP feature called Knowledge Graph.

Today, Google has more than 15 SERP features that all steal traffic from websites.

Before choosing a keyword, learn how many clicks it gets in Ahrefs Keywords Explorer.

keyword clicks

To double-check things, type the chosen keyword into Google and see how it delivers results for it.

Keyword Difficulty

This keyword metric reveals how hard it will be for your content to appear in the Top 10.

The lower the difficulty score, the easier it’ll be for your site to get to the top of search results.

If you are just starting out, you’d better stick with low difficulty keywords.

As you earn more authority, feel free to switch to keywords with a higher difficulty score.

You can view the keyword difficulty score in Ahrefs Keywords Explorer and also learn how many backlinks your site needs to rank in the Top 10 for that keyword.

Group Keywords by Categories

In the end, you will come up with hundreds of keywords.

If you don’t want to get lost in such a large number, try to group them by categories.

Speaking about “PrestaShop themes,” you can group results by the following categories:

  • PrestaShop version (prestashop 1.7 themes, prestashop 1.6 themes)
  • Design (full width prestashop themes, clean free prestashop themes, free 3 column prestashop themes)
  • Features (lightweight prestashop themes, responsive prestashop themes, customizable prestashop themes)
  • Niche (computers & internet prestashop themes, prestashop themes electronics camera, prestashop music themes)
  • Related questions (how to use prestashop themes, how to import images into prestashop themes, how do i install prestashop themes)
  • Status (best prestashop themes, prestashop themes most popular)
  • Price (cheap prestashop themes, free themes for prestashop, prestashop premium themes)

Note that these are just examples.

You will come up with your own categories depending on your niche and products.

Final Word

Although Google is smart today, you can outsmart it with your human brain and some wit.

Now that you know the major steps to research keywords in line with Google algorithms, traffic is not long in coming.

No matter what niche you’re involved in, these guidelines are universal for all.

Can you recommend any other strategies to maximize the efficiency of keyword research?

Feel free to share them in the comments to this post!
