How Dave Bowden Started a Fashion Blog with 35,000 Monthly Visitors and Grew 131% This Year

Ready to learn how to start a fashion blog?

Maybe you have an eye for a great outfit. Or are you always being complimented on your latest style and want to share your fashion tips with the world.

You’ve decided that now is the time to “purse-shoe” your dreams in the world of fashion blogging.

Today I’ve got some inspiration for you and perhaps someone that you can learn from.

Dave Bowden doesn’t run just any beauty blog; he’s the founder of Irreverent Gent, an online resource inspiring men with both fashion and confidence advice.

The Irreverent Gent has been featured in AskMen, HuffingtonPost, Business Insider, and Readers Digest. Dave also mentions that most important of all his articles were posted to his parent’s refrigerator.

Not only does Dave run the successful blog, but he’s written the Amazon #1 bestseller “Man in Command.”

If your goal is to become a fashion blogger, you shouldn’t expect overnight success.

In fact, it took years for Dave to start earning a real income with his fashion blog. But as he stuck with his goals, he was able to continually improve. In 2020 he was able to grow his web traffic by 131%.

The Irreverent Gent is a successful fashion blog that gets over 35k visitors each month. The traffic and success came with some valuable lessons learned.

Dave tells us about how he was spreading himself too thin. In the early days of his blog, initiatives such as social media, affiliate marketing, and creating brand partnerships consumed his time.

When he began to really focus and leverage professional tools, his fashion niche site began to take off.

Hello! Could you introduce your background and why you choose to start a blog in the fashion industry?

My name is Dave Bowden, and I’m the founder and editor of Irreverent Gent, a men’s style and lifestyle blog that shows guys how to sharpen their style and improve their confidence.

I’ve carved out a niche for myself in the men’s lifestyle space by creating articles that are not only informative and insightful but also engaging, fun to read, and (as the name suggests) irreverent.

I also take the same approach to writing books, a space in which I’m best known as the author of Man in Command: How to Go From the Most Self-Doubting Guy in the Room to The Most Confident Man, which is an Amazon #1 bestseller (in Canada… but still!).

Since I’ve been working from home over the past year, I’ve been pouring more time and energy into Irreverent Gent. The results have been rewarding.

My website traffic has more than doubled in the past 12 months, and my revenue is up by 10x.

What’s your backstory, and why did you start your fashion blog?

I started Irreverent Gent to basically combine a few of my passions into one project.

The first is style and menswear, which I’ve been obsessed with for more than a decade. I’ve always been fascinated with the effect that style can have both on you as an individual, and on the way other people perceive you.

Irreverent Gent gives me an excuse to not only explore that topic further but share what I learn with guys who can benefit from it.

The second passion it allows me to pursue is content marketing.

As a journalist-turned-blogger, I became a content marketer about eight years ago when I got a job running a travel blog, and quickly found that it’s the perfect way for me to combine my skill sets into one creative and professional endeavor.

What I love about blogging and content marketing is how I get to make both creative and business decisions. From what image to pair with a headline to what the overarching business strategy should be, I’m in complete control.

Dave Bowden

What has worked for you to drive traffic to your sites?

My biggest traffic source is organic, and my blog really started to take off when I got serious about SEO and keyword research.

This year I finally stopped using free keyword tools and invested in a monthly Ahrefs subscription, which has already paid for itself multiple times over.

To give you an example, my organic traffic in December 2020 is up 144% compared to the same month in 2019:

The two biggest things that have contributed to this growth are:

<imgsrc=”https: www.nichepursuits.com=”” wp-content=”” uploads=”” 2021=”” 01=”” blitz-deals-2-280×255.png”=””></imgsrc=”https:>
  • Learn how to build white hat links to your site without headaches
  • Finally have a proven method to finding profitable niches
  • Get access to our foolproof keyword research methods
  • Learn how to outsource high quality content

Get The Authority Site System

  1. Improved keyword research tactics – I’m now targeting more competitive keywords and creating content geared specifically toward those phrases
  2. Some good ol’ fashioned elbow grease, meaning that I’m producing more posts more frequently, resulting in a higher quantity of output.

It’s this combination of increased quantity and higher quality that’s really led to more growth.

Building a fashion blog, have you learned anything particularly helpful or advantageous?

The most advantageous thing I’ve learned from building my blog is the supremacy of the 80/20 rule. Focusing on the 20% of activities that bring in 80% of the results.

Before this year, I was spreading myself too thin by devoting roughly equal amounts of time to content creation, keyword research, social media, link building, and brand partnerships.

Eventually, I realized that the two things that make the biggest impact on my bottom line are keyword research and content creation, so I doubled down on those, which resulted in exponential growth.

I think it’s common for entrepreneurs and website owners to get bogged down by bouncing back and forth between the various hats they have to wear and tasks they have to manage, but the truth is that real growth comes from identifying your most valuable tasks and leaning into them as much as possible.

How long did it take you to begin making money with your fashion blog?

It didn’t take long to make the first couple of bucks – I joined Amazon’s affiliate marketing program and started earning money almost right away, though very little of it.

What did take long was earning enough money that you could call it an income, or even a side hustle. It took a few years of consistent work to start earning a respectable amount of money from affiliate income, but what’s nice about blogging is that it compounds.

The posts that produced those first few dollars continue to produce a few bucks each month, but now I’ve got hundreds more doing the same.

The other thing that helped was expanding my income streams.

In addition to affiliate ads, I now also run display ads on the site. The ads bring in a smaller but steady stream of cash each month.

I also write books that I self-publish on Amazon, which also generate a nice monthly sum.

What platform/tools do you use for your fashion blog?

As mentioned, my favorite tool by far is Ahrefs, which has made my keyword research so much faster, more efficient, and more effective, leading to a lot of growth.

In addition to Ahrefs, I use ConvertKit as my email service provider, which was built for bloggers and works really well for capturing email addresses and dripping out content.

What is your philosophy or strategy when it comes to link building?

I tend to differentiate between active and passive link building.

Active link building is anything that requires time, which pulls me away from my primary duties of keyword research and content creation.

I only pursue active link building with sites that have a domain authority of 50-plus. This goes back to the 80/20 rule. If I’m going to spend time pursuing links, I want to make sure they’re high value links that will help me build my own authority.

Passive link building is done more through content creation.

Creating super high-quality posts that rank high in search also tend to get more linkbacks, so in that sense my content creation efforts don’t just help me build traffic, but also have a secondary benefit of resulting in more links.

Advice for other online entrepreneurs who want to get started or are just starting out?

My advice for anyone getting started is to maintain a long view and understand that consistency is key.

It can be discouraging to pour hours into content creation and publish something you think is awesome, but then not see any traffic flowing to it.

You have to power through that and remain undeterred. If you only have one piece of great content, it’s hard to get the authority and attention you need to monetize it. But it’s a lot easier when you have 10, and easier still when you have 100, 1000, etc. So keep going, keep creating and keep publishing.

As your quantity of output improves, so does the quality. Building all that content requires putting in the famous (or infamous, depending on who you ask) “10,000 hours”. Making you more skilled as you go.

So keep pushing, keep going, and keep at it.

Now that you’ve heard from Dave on what it takes to build a successful travel blog. Let’s take a look at what you’ll need to start your own WordPress blog in the fashion world?

How I went from Zero Pinterest Traffic to 50K Pinterest Visitors in One Month

How I went from Zero Pinterest Traffic to 50K Pinterest Visitors in One Month

disclosureOne of my friends was telling me back in January how she receives hundreds of thousands of visits from Pinterest. I knew I wanted to jump on the Pinterest traffic bandwagon, but wasn’t quite sure how. Then last month, when my daughter told me she searches Pinterest for everything (like how to treat a sore throat) instead of using Google, I knew I needed to take the initiative to learn how to get traffic from Pinterest. And I did.

I went from ZERO Pinterest traffic to a new visitor every minute in one month’s time (and this StatCounter image is just from one of my websites).

Traffic from Pinterest

Here’s how you can do it, too…

First, if you don’t have a Pinterest account, get one now! I’ll wait right here.

Important First Steps

Once you have an account, it’s important that you follow these steps:

  1. Make sure your Pinterest account is set up as a Business Account. You can convert your personal account quite easily by clicking here.
  2. Add your website URL to your Profile and confirm your website.
  3. Enable Rich Pins. First you must make sure that your website supports Rich Pins. If you use the Yoast SEO Plug-in, then you do already! If you don’t, I suggest that plug-in (plus it’s free). Click here to validate that you have Rich Pins enabled and submit your site to Pinterest.

Why Rich Pins?

Want to know why I did all of the above? See the example below where I compare pins before and after enabling Rich Pins.

Why You Should Enable Rich Pins on Pinterest

See the difference? Adding Rich Pins adds your blog name and blog post title above the pin as well as the meta description below the pin. This not only helps users know more about your pin, but it add great SEO value.

If you have multiple blogs on different domains (like I do), I suggest that you set up a Pinterest account for each domain name. That way every url can have Rich Pins enabled. Keep reading to see how I manage multiple Pinterest accounts easily.

SEO Hint

A good SEO strategy that I recommend is editing the description of each board to include what your board is about and include keywords that you’d like that board to rank for. Have you noticed how when you Google something, a lot of queries are Pinterest links? Yes, and we want our boards to be in those listings!

Think of Pinterest as a Search Engine with Images!

Best Image Size

The best image size for Pinterest graphics is 735 x 1102 pixels.

Pajama Affiliates gives you more tips on how to create good Pinterest images, like using vibrant colors, good keyword phrases in your titles and easy to read fonts.

Creating Images

I have been using Picmonkey for a couple years to create graphics (unfortunately it is no longer free), but my new BFF is Stencil (they also have a free version). Why do I love Stencil so much? Let me count the ways…

  1. You can search 1 million royalty free photos right from their site and add that image to your graphic. No more trying to find a free images and importing it, although you can import if need be.
  2. Recommended size templates for everything imaginable! I use the “Pinterest Post (735×1102)” the most, but it has all the sizes for every social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Google+, LinkedIn, Youtube) posts, ad and/or header size.
  3. Design templates galore! Simply change the image and the wording and you can have a graphic made in literally under a minute.
  4. And this is my favorite part… You can share your image and message directly to social media! No more downloading a dozen images and going to upload to the various social media platforms. Every time I update an old post with a new Pinterest graphic, I share the post and appropriate sized graphics via social media.

Stencil Share To Pinterest Example

Another SEO Hint

When adding your graphic for Pinterest to your blog post, don’t forget to add keyword rich descriptions to the “Alternative Text”. I recommend using different verbiage from the title and the meta description since those will show with Rich Pins. You may want it to sound more “personal” as well since it will show where the person sharing usually comments. i.e. “Yum! This chocolate cake looks delicious and perfect for a picnic.”

Hiding Images

If you don’t want your Pinterest graphic to show up on your actual post, especially if it’s very similar to the main blog post image, you can “hide” it from the blog surfer, but still make it available for pinning. Simply add this code around your image source (Under “Text” in WordPress):

<img….></img….>

But, Where’s The Traffic?

So now that your Pinterest account is good to go, and you know how to make the best Pinterest images to use, you need people to see what you’re pinning!

Grow Your Followers

  • Make sure you have a link to Pinterest on your blog and cross promote on your other social platforms. i.e. Tweet out “Do you follow us on Pinterest yet?” with a link to your Pinterest account.
  • MiloTree is one of my favorite new finds that pops up on your site asking visitors to follow you. And this plug-in is free, too!
  • Repin “popular” pins that already have hundreds, if not thousands of repins, so you may show up to those other pinners as someone they should follow.
  • Update! Pinterest now allows hashtags, so start adding your keywords as hashtags to your pin descriptions. When you add, you’ll see how many others pins have that same hashtag. Since it’s still new, you may be the first to use a specific hashtag!

Join Group Boards

Finding and pinning to relevant group boards that allow collaborators gets your pins seen more often. I wish Pinterest offered the option of requesting to collaborate to group boards, but unfortunately they don’t. Some group board owners include instructions on how to contribute to their group board in the board description (i.e. email, fill out form, leave comment, contact via Pinterest).

Finding Group Boards To Join

Sometimes finding group boards is the biggest challenge. But I’m going to make it easier for you!  I’ve already went to a lot of trouble and finding and joining group boards, so if you’d like to join any of the group boards that I belong to, simply follow me on Pinterest and then contact me with your Pinterest URL and all the boards you’d like to join (please include the full URL so I can just click it on and don’t have to search as some boards may have the same name if I don’t own it). I may not be able to add you to all as not all owners allow others to add, but if I can, I will.

Pinterest Ads

Much like you can buy Google Ads and Facebook Ads, you can promote your pins. You can pay for “awareness” (impressions), “engagement” (likes, repins) or “traffic” (visitor to your site). I recommend traffic. The stuff that made Pinterest popular (i.e. crafts and recipes) are going to be quite expensive to buy keywords for, but you can get clicks for pennies to your site on newer niches (to Pinterest).

Who Has This Much Time?

Time Saver

I use Tailwind to schedule my posts at optimal times when Pinterest is the busiest. So it may look like I’m pinning all day long, when in reality, I set those all up last week. I installed the Chrome extension so I can schedule directly from Pinterest or my websites.

Whenever I add a new post or update my old posts, I share the graphic directly to Pinterest, then I use that pin for Tailwind so it’s repinned. Pinterest changed it’s algorithm to favor those pins with more repins.

Tribes

Tailwind also recently introduced Tribes. There are various Tailwind Tribes (similar to Group Boards) with different niches where you can contribute pins and share other’s pins in exchange. I found this list of Tribes to join (most let you join instantly). I even started my own Tribe for fashion and beauty bloggers as I couldn’t find any Tribes in that niche.

Multiple Accounts

Remember I told you how I manage multiple Pinterest accounts? I set up the main boards on those accounts as group boards so that my main Pinterest account can contribute, or collaborate, as they call it. So they are basically “group boards”, but only I can pin to them. That way I can pin to multiple accounts from one account.

5 Content Marketing Hacks For Attracting More Website Visitors (Plus Clients)

5 Content Marketing Hacks For Attracting More Website Visitors (Plus Clients)

By

Every website owner probably wants more traffic coming into their site. I shouldn’t have to repeat the cliché that “traffic is the lifeblood of any blog”… I’m sure you already know that.

This is because you won’t get more clients without more traffic. It’s only when you’re able to bring people to your website that you will have the chance to convert them into customers.

In other words…

  • More traffic = More customers = More money

Does that make sense?

That said, if more website traffic has been your problem all this time, I want you to bring your seat closer as I’m about to unveil to you some great ideas you can use to attract more traffic to your website.

I want you to understand that there are many ways you can drive traffic to your site, but today, we’re going to talk about five ways you can hack content marketing to increase traffic.

5 Content Marketing Hacks for Attracting More Website Visitors

1. Come Up With Viral Content Ideas

First of all, you have to understand why certain content goes viral while others don’t. Once you’ve figured this out, it will become easier for you to adapt to what works.

According to Jonah Berger, an associate professor of marketing, Wharton School, useful and practical content that arouses emotion gets shared the most.

Emotions that make online content go viral

Gone are the days when all you needed to do was create content that appealed to Google alone. If you want to remain relevant in your industry today, your primary focus should be on your readers.

The search engines can come later.

It pays more to focus on valuable and emotionally driven content that your audience will highly benefit from. Once you’re able to achieve this, they will help spread the word about it.

You may not necessarily succeed at having viral ideas each time, but nailing it once in a while will go a long way in enhancing your website’s traffic and getting more clients.

To help you in your viral content idea brainstorming, provide an answer to the following questions:

  • Do you know of any trending idea that people will find interesting?
  • Is the idea funny? Can it be made funny?
  • Is your idea capable of arousing controversy in the industry?
  • Will adding videos, attention-grabbing images, or infographics to your idea make it stickier?
  • How can you easily reach out to industry influencers and ask them to share your content?

Don’t forget that great content marketing strategy with positive recipes will perform much better online. If you can continually stimulate positive emotions from your content, people will naturally be attracted to you.

You don’t have to reinvent the wheel here. Just identify good writers, authority bloggers, and leading marketers in your niche who seem to dominate the entire market with their content. Study them and use their formulas to craft your own engaging content.

2. Write In-Depth Articles

No matter how good you are at content promotion, if your content suck, you’re not going anywhere. Basically, for your content promotion strategies to yield a really positive result, your content must be epic.

This is the type of content that both Google and your potential clients will love.

What you need to do is research your topic thoroughly and make sure that you cover everything with precision and detail.

This type of article is usually over 2,000 words.

According to serpIQ, articles that contain 2,000 words or more tend to perform better on search engines:

Average content length of top 10 results

Therefore, by continuously publishing irresistible, thought-provoking, and in-depth articles, you will be able to attract not only more search traffic, but also more social shares.

Average Shares by content length

From the two charts above, you will see that long-form content converts better than short-form content. To back up this claim, a recent study performed by Marketing Experiments shows that on their homepage, long-form content outperformed short-form content by 30% in terms of conversions.

For you to be able to craft this type of content, do the following:

  • Pick a broad subject – e.g. email marketing, blogging, web traffic – then write about it in-depth.
  • Always target a long tail keyword in your title – e.g. how to make money as an affiliate blogger.
  • Extensively research current and accurate data and statistics to back up your claims.
  • Create interesting, engaging, entertaining, and educational content on the subject.
  • Include relevant graphics, videos, or slide presentations.
  • Link out to competent authority blogs.
  • Add a call-to-action (CTA).

3. Make Your Headlines Irresistible

Without a good headline, even the most comprehensive content will be ignored. Your headline is one of the most important aspects of your content.

If you wish to grab your audience’s attention, then you must learn how to craft attention grabbing and enchanting headlines. This is because you have only about 8 seconds to either keep or lose them to your competitors.

It’s no wonder that the experts say you should spend the same amount of time writing your content as you do writing your headline.

Writing magnetic headlines will not only bring you more visitors and potential clients, but it will always keep them coming back to your site.

4. Use Advanced Guest Posting

Basically, there are two ways to build a blog audience via content marketing:

  • Writing excellent articles on your own blog and getting important people to know about it.
  • Publishing quality-filled content on other relevant blogs in your niche.

Whichever you choose, what matters most is that you’re delivering value to people and thereby converting them into fans and customers.

However, while guest posting can help you build quality links from authority blogs, don’t make link building your primary focus; instead, use it to build a relationship and attract targeted visitors to your site who you will eventually convert to clients.

That was how the guys at GrooveHQ were able to reach over 1,000,000 people within their first year of blogging.

The best guest blogging strategy is to use it to build your audience and not to get links to boost your search ranking. Believe me, if everything is done properly, the links will naturally come without you asking for them.

Follow the steps below to improve your guest blogging tactics for better traffic and exposure:

Step 1. Search for relevant blogs in your niche.

By “relevant blogs”, I mean the blogs that already attract your ideal audience. To do this, simply go to Google and do some research – e.g. if you’re into social media marketing, you could search for the keyword “beginner’s guide to social media marketing”:

Search for relevant blogs in your niche

Now that you already know the blogs that attract the type of audience you’re looking for, let’s go to the next step.

Step 2. Analyze the site’s social influence.

The fact that a web page ranks high on Google does not mean that it will drive lots of traffic to your blog.

You need to find out how many people are likely going to share your post on Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter, Pinterest, etc.

To figure this out, input the blog’s URL into the Buzzsumo search field and discover the number of social shares their recent blog posts gathered. Let’s do this with one of the blogs we got earlier “business2community.com”:

Analyze the site's social influence

From this research, you can see that the blog posts published on business2community.com for the past six months attracted over 70,000 social shares. Isn’t that terrific?

This tells you that if you’re able to land a guest posting opportunity here, you should be able to drive loads of traffic back to your site. Not only that, but you will also gain authority links and a bunch of social shares.

Now that you’ve analyzed the site, the next thing you should do is dig into the website’s archive for some of their older posts related to your topic. Once you’ve found one that was well received by that site’s audience, hack it, and craft an even more detailed article covering the same subject.

Here, you want to make the headline really attractive and enchanting, and follow the points we’ve already made above to write the article. Ensure that it’s better than what’s already published on their site.

After you’re done writing the content, contact the blog owner and let them know about the post. If they accept it, the next thing you should do is to send outreach emails to other influencers who will help to promote the post.

5. Rinse and Repeat

You don’t want to apply these tactics once and start sleeping. While you are able to get a good amount of traffic if done well, you should always strive for me.

You want to keep on doing this until you’re tired of getting traffic to your blog (which I doubt you ever will be). The best approach to growing any business both online and offline is to keep on doing what works for you.

The more epic content you write and the more popular blogs you write for, the more exposure you get, the more traffic you’ll be able to drive back to your site, the more friends you’ll make, and the more money you stand to earn.

Therefore, once you’re able to publish an article on one popular site following the steps above, rinse and repeat the process for even more traffic and clients.

Conclusion

There are many ways you can attract more website traffic, and the best way is to try to do what works for others and see if it can have any results for you.

The strategies I’ve shared here are what have worked for many people, and I’m sure they will equally work for you, too.

Just make sure that when you are applying these techniques, you are paying careful attention to performing the process properly. If you do, you’ll notice that everything starts to work out just fine.

When you start to get more traffic, you can convert these visitors into clients and customers. That’s when the real magic of blogging takes hold.

What are some of the things you do to drive more traffic to your blog? How do you attract more clients? Let’s hear your thoughts in the comments below!
